Misfires or black smoke
If the air filter problem is bad enough, it can significantly impact the way your engine runs. In gasoline engines, each cylinder usually has an ideal amount of air, fuel, and spark that creates combustion. With diesel engines, when there's not enough air due to a clogged or dirty filter, the balance is thrown off, and the engine may not start at all.
If the situation is bad enough, it can result in engine misfires. This situation means that some cylinders aren’t producing power or combusting as they should. While many things can cause this problem, such as bad spark plugs or fuel pumps, a dirty air filter is also on the list.
Signs of an engine misfire can be gentle stumbling to more violent shaking. Your power or the tachometer rpm reading might noticeably fluctuate too.
Black smoke coming out of the exhaust is another sign. This smoke usually happens when unburnt fuel passes through the engine, which can result from a dirty air filter failing to let in enough air.
